Horses are magnificent and intelligent creatures who can all achieve great things. Often in their own quirky way – but nevertheless, greatness. However, these four talented one eyed horses have pushed the limits and have all achieved success at the top level of competition – despite their handicap.
Adventure De Kannan
Adventure De Kannan made history by becoming the first one-eyed horse to win the prestigious Hickstead Derby in 2014. Irishman, Trevor Breen rode the current 19-year-old bay Belgium Warmblood to victory, despite the gelding having an operation in 2013 to remove his right eye.
Tornesch
Tornesch, the popular 19-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion, who was ridden by Swedish showjumper, Malin Baryard-Johnsoon had a extremely successful career. The duo had a successful 8-year partnership which saw them compete at the 2011 and 2015 European Championships, as well as the 2011, 2013 and 2014 World Cup Finals. The stunning bay stallion retired from competition in 2016.
Briarlands Blackberry
One-eyed eventing star, Briarlands Blackberry competed at various CCI3* classes with British eventer, Isabelle Taylor.
Santana
Swedish dressage rider, Minna Telde’s Hanoverian stallion, Santana qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. The duo scored 67.47 in the Grand Prix and 72.27 in the Grand Prix Special. In 2009, the stallion had an accident in his stable which resulted in his left being removed.
